Fire Safety For Kids
Making a family plan
One of the more important aspects of fire safety is having a plan in place in your home, where each of the members of the family know their role in the event that there is a fire. The adults should get together first and put together a plan of attack, so to speak, on how they will approach the subject as a family. But, everyone should be included at some level so that there is no chaos if ever you do need to get out of the house fast. There are many fire safety tips that you can compile as a kind of primer for your family as you sit down together and make your plan.
Information at their level
The youngest members of the family will have to have things explained to them in a way that they can understand, but that does not scare them too much. A great place to start is your local library where you will find a variety of resources that help to teach fire safety for kids. You can pick up a few books, videos, or DVDs that will present the material to your children in a way that they will be able to grasp. Some cute books with their favorite characters are a good way to say goodnight and prepare them for the family fire safety meeting. After they have absorbed some of the info that you have provided, then you can invite them to ask any questions that they might have or about any ideas they may have gotten from the videos and books.
Knowing how the fires start is also imperative to learn, not just how to get out of the house safely if there is a fire. Learning about kitchen safety is part and parcel of fire safety in general as many fires are started there and because of improper use of appliances or forgetting to turn them off when the family leaves or goes to bed for the night. Make fire safety for kids the hot topic in your house!
Your fire extinguishers are very important. What's that? Only have one fire extinguisher? Shame on you. Get more.
