Drowning is a number one killer of small children in many states, it is simply happening far to often. These deaths can be prevented and one of the best defenses against the risk of drowning os installing pool fences and strictly adhering to a code of pool safety. There are many places in the United States where , by law, every pool must be surrounded by pool fences and each municipality has their own regulations that should be known before you buy or install your fences. You can incur some pretty hefty fines if you do not have pool fences properly in place.

As we said the first step you should take is to contact the local authorities to make sure that you have everything up to code. Besides that follow these guidelines for added safety:

Remember that proper maintenance is as important as proper installation. Do check ups on the overall state of our fences frequently.
If you have purchased a fence that you are planning to install by yourself, Follow the directions to a T! Pool fences are the last thing that you should be hurried to complete or skip part of the directions for. If you are not up for the job, have a professional do it for you.
Buy fences that are at the very least 4 feet tall. Anything lower might be able to be scaled by those adventurous toddlers.
Make sure the entire pool is surrounded by the fence. There should be no access to the pool from the house, the yard, or the garage. Accidents are much less likely to occur if the pool is a difficult to get into as possible.
Make sure that the gates or doors swing outwards to open. That way leaning on them will not be as much of a risk.
Keep all things that could be used to scale the fence far, far away from the fence, don't give the little ones anything to think about!
Do not leave a space between the bottom of the fence and the floor, it doesn't take much space for a child to squeeze through.

Even if you do not have any children, pool fencing should be installed and you might be legally bound to do so. Check with officials or you run the risk of large fines. It is not unknown for neighboring children to find their way into other people's pools. This is one pool safety product that you simply cannot do without.
